Brynne and Hadley have an announcement...

...they are big sisters!

Ruby Edith
03 January 2013
9 pounds
20 inches long

I've wanted to put something up here for days now. It's a challenge when I don't often have two free hands, so I'm going with short and sweet.

There's the hope that I'll be able to write more soon---we'll see.

All is well. Our three little girls are adjusting better than I could have ever imagined, largely due to the overwhelming love and support we've received from our community here. We are blessed to do life with some amazingly generous people, who love us well---what a gift.

Our hearts (and our hands) are full of good things.

Run, run as fast as you can...

Yesterday afternoon the four of us spent some time outside, running around in this windy, warm 70 degree weather that's making my daffodils bloom like crazy!

It was glorious!

At one point, Brynne was exploring something with her papa, and I followed Hadley around the side of the house.

We ran. We ran and ran and spun and twirled, and ran some more.

This might not seem worth mentioning to you, but it's a huge deal.

For the past five months (or more) our Hadley has been plagued with a cough that just won't quit.

She coughs at night.
She coughs when she runs around.
She coughs.

A terribly, dry, bark-y cough.

Hadley's an active kid. Restricting her play was heartbreaking.

Yesterday we got our answer---it's asthma.

Answers = Treatment = Less Coughing

Joy!

In the midst of running and laughing and twirling with my daughter, I suddenly realized---I didn't have to make her stop. She wasn't coughing!

I might have gotten a little teary-eyed, but let's just blame it on the wind.

Our girls are two years old!!

Our girls are TWO!! Can you even believe it?

Okay. Maybe you can. But it's pretty incredible to me. Amazing. Really amazing! Two! We had so much fun celebrating "two" together as a family. And, there was some other cool stuff that I'm so very thankful for too:

I came home from the hair show on Monday with such fun hair! (1089) My handsome, giving, flexible husband was willing and able to take a day off, so that I could strut my stuff on stage (1090). Ha!

The girls say an exuberant Amen! after we pray at mealtimes (1091). Then, they both need a kiss from both Mama and Papa before the begin eating---such a fun routine!! (1092)

We went to see the ducks and geese at our local nature reserve multiple times this week, taking advantage of the warm weather (1093). On the girls' birthday we all walked the entire lap, around the water, which is just over a mile!! (1094) So impressed with our girls!

We also walked out over the water without the stroller. (1095) Our girls did a great job of obeying--holding our hands, and walking carefully. (1096) This picture will show you just why I always sweat a little when we take our girls out over the water:

Here's a pretty sweet picture of Brad and Hadley.
Death grip on Miss Brynne. I can never relax out there.

For their birthday dinner, our girls enjoyed noodles for our local Asian food restaurant. (1097) Brynne did a great job eating with chopsticks! (1098)

Speaking of wonderful weather, the girls and I went to the playground with my friend and her two little girls. (1099) It was great chatting with her, getting to know her better. (1100)

I took the girls back to that same park later in the week. All the equiptment is just their size, (1101) so this mama can handle them climbing and sliding without worrying that they are gong to break something. (1102)

Hadley being just like her mama. (1103)

Brynne, cozy between her grandparents, with her baby, listening to a story. (1104)

Grandparents reading familiar stories to our girls, so we could have a night off. (1105)

Heart-shaped French toast for the girls' birthday breakfast (made by my rockstar husband!). (1106)

Just Like Me

Right before the girls were born, the ultrasound tech gave us a great picture of Brynne's foot.

I was elated! There were her toes, clear as day. And--they were just like her mama's. Second toe was bigger than the first toe.

Mama's toes
Brynne's toes

It just thrilled me that we would share that similarity--toes. Hadley came into the world, and we discovered her toes are like her mama's too.

Apart from those beautiful feet, my girls' appearance seems to be more like Brad. Hadley has his amazing blue eyes. Brynne is a mini-Brad in appearance.

So, I guess if they can't look like me, they can act a bit like me.

I was watching Hadley play with two baby dolls the other day this is what I saw:

Do you see it?

She's pretending to be a twin mama.

I wish you could see how she pulls up the shopping cart to the rocking chair, and loads the dolls in one at a time.

So cute!

Apparently these girls are watching, or paying attention, or something.

Mama Loves: Wine Corks

Welcome to another week of Mama Loves! So glad that you've stopped by!

Mama Loves is a linky party where mamas can share anything that has made your life easier as a mama.

Maybe you've found:
  • a toy or book that captivates your child(ren)
  • gear you just can't live without
  • a recipe your choosy toddler gobbles down
  • a parenting book that you've found perspective changing
  • an activity that wears your kid(s) out (these lead to good naps, which we all love)
  • an outfit that flatters your post-baby body and makes you feel fabulous
  • or anything else you're loving--creativity welcome!
Share it with us! Blogging has made me a better mama, because I've learned about all kinds of great things, like those listed above, from mamas just like you. Here's your chance to share it with all of us!

To link your post up, click on the linky tool at the bottom, and follow the directions, it's really easy. You can also add this beautiful button to your post. Just grab the code in the box, copy and paste it into your post. Easy.

I'd seen an idea on Pinterest awhile back to make some wall art with wine corks.
We have a fair number of corks around here.

Instead of attempting this while the girls were sleeping, I thought maybe they'd enjoy the sensory experience of the corks, while I attempted to make art.

Hadley loves to work quietly on puzzles, or other activities, so I shouldn't have been surprised that she quickly caught on to me finding corks to stand on end to make a heart.

She would search through the bag. To find just the right cork for me. Then she'd balance it on its end, and add it to our project.

We did this together:

To be honest, I didn't want the red or yellow one in there, but Hadley found those, and she was so excited to include them, so there they are.

I wasn't quite ready to bust out the glue while the girls were awake. So, while they were sleeping, I glued the corks on a board to be hung on our wall.

Hadley is so proud of our project!

My point in this post, is not to tell you about our project. It's to tell you how awesome corks are! While our girls were throwing corks all over our living room enjoying the sensory experience of a bag full or corks, I came up with a few other useful/educational things for us to do with corks that I thought you might be interested in.

I got out the shapes from our shape-sorter, and had the girls attempt to make circles, squares and triangles with the corks:

Even if your littles aren't yet ready for making shapes, standing the corks up helps with hand/eye coodination:

To get more advanced, your kids can make letters or words out of the corks:

If you don't drink enough wine for these projects, restaurants or wine bars often save corks, and will be happy for you to take them off their hands, just ask! I might be able to spare a few too.

Can't wait to see what you're loving!!

Also sharing this here.

And here.

Famous

I think our little Hadley might just be famous someday.

For awhile she was sporting hair like Justin Beiber.

She loves to dance on the register, letting the air blow her hair and clothes just like Marilyn Monroe.

Now, her hair, resembles Farrah Fawcett's coiffure. Check it out:

You Can't Always Get What You Want

Hadley, come get a bite.
I call to her from the kitchen.

She looks up from her play, hesitates, but doesn't make a move. I could see her weighing her options about something, a perplexed look etched on her face.

I assume she's ultimately decided that she doesn't want a bite of her favorite breakfast food, and go on about emptying the dishwasher.

A few moments later, I see her coming for that bite, dragging a large, cumbersome rocking horse behind her.

You see--Hadley just couldn't bear to leave the rocking horse, even for a moment, because her sister might "get" it.

I laugh, and sigh.

Each time she comes for a bite, she stubbornly, and determinedly drags the rocking horse with her, keeping a protective hand on "Howard" while she opens her mouth for a bite.

Lately I feel like my girls are in a gladiator ring, each on a mission to take the other one down.

I've broken up some pretty terrible fights between my sweet daughters. One look at Brynne and Hadley's arms reveal their battle wounds--bruises and bite marks blemish their soft skin.

Our pastor wasn't kidding Sunday when he said parenting toddlers is like taming an undomesticated wild animal.

At the heart of my two toddlers are two questions.
Am I loved?
and
Can I have my own way?
The answers are:
Yes.
and
No.
Hadley drags Howard with her to get a bite, because she's fighting to have things her way.

The girls bite and hit one another, because each is impeding the other from getting their own way.

In walks discipline--that's me (mostly), Brad and my sidekick Jesus.

We have the very hard job of telling (and showing) our daughters that they are loved unconditionally, and in the same breath we are telling (and showing) them that they can't get their own way.

It's tough.

I struggle and I flail. Especially when it looks like The Gladiator, minus Russell Crowe, up in here.

I'm working on finding that balance of love and grace and discipline and correction.

My wild animals need it--they need all of it.

And I need a glass of wine!

One of the scariest things I've ever had to do was to get through this high ropes course.

I was terrified!

I mean, really terrified.

I felt like I'd lost all control of my body---my legs were shaking, and I think I might have even heard my knees knocking together.

Even though we were told not to, I kept looking down at the ground really, really, really far below.

I started crying.

You see, the way to get through the course wasn't to look down at the ground. (even though I was harnessed in and had a death grip the ropes holding me skyward).

The way to get through the course was to look strait ahead--it steadied my steps and improved my balance.

Hadley walks towards Brynne.

Her arms are full.

She's carrying a green ball and a pink ball.

She gives the pink ball to Brynne.

Hadley looks at me, and signs "share".

They laugh, and run off together.

I'm keeping my eyes strait ahead.

And giving my sidekick, Jesus, a high five.

Pigtails

On facebook the other day, a fellow twin mama commented that,
"Herding wet cats would have to be easier than getting the girls' hair into pigtails."
I quite agree, so I stopped with one. For all the wrangling it took to get it done, the results are pretty cute:

Hello Marilyn!

In true Marilyn fashion, my Hadley decided that she loves dancing on the register when the air conditioning is blowing.

The car in her hands? Just her twist on the classic:
